Title: Product Specialist
Location(s): Lisle, Illinois

Summary: Under direct supervision from the Business Manager of Plugs or Plants, the Product Specialist position is responsible for managing the workflow, commercial support activities and supplier management activities of the assigned product lines and vendors. Product specialist may be called upon from time to time to cross-train and perform the duties of the various team members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Analyze current and future product lines to determine their fit with current market trends
  • Evaluate current product lines and vendors and recommend appropriate action
  • Meet with suppliers to exchange ideas on how to enhance profitable sales
  • Develop programs for the sale and marketing of assigned product lines
  • Create sales tools e.g. mailings, variety information, photos
  • Prepare customized sales information for sales reps, other internal personal and customers
  • Ensure price page updates of new offerings
  • Create product pricing from vendor offerings to maximize profitability
  • Develop quotes using excel
  • Review sales history to assist sales reps in capturing unbooked business
  • Generate quotes for sales reps and customers via Prelude and Excel
  • Develop gross margin reports to insure maximum profitability and take appropriate actions when reports indicate that profitability does not meet company standards
  • Negotiate with vendors for the best costs for standard and custom orders
  • Assist in the development of business plans for assigned product lines
  • Communicate any open issues and make recommendations for problem resolution

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

  • Knowledge of assigned product lines would be preferred, such as plugs, perennials, un-rooted cuttings, and poinsettias
  • Knowledge of horticultural marketing
  • A Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, business, or equivalent experience in the horticulture industry
  • At least two years of experience working with horticultural product lines preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to make quick decisions in an environment where there are multiple priorities and requests.
  • Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities
  • Proven interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrated time management and multitasking skills
