The 2007 editions of Griffin's Grower Expos took place on August 15 in Springfield, MA (Northern Expo) and September 26 in Lancaster, PA (Southern Expo). The word of the day at each show was optimism. Growers and exhibitors alike commented on how optimistic the mood was this year after a solid spring season. Our next order of business is to string two or three strong years together.
The site of the Northern Expo was Springfield's Eastern States Exposition Center. This was the second year at the facility with plenty of room for expansion. Comfortably air conditioned, the building accommodated all areas of the Expo under a single roof. The trade show, educational program, and meal areas were busy throughout the day. Over 90 exhibitors attended the show, and growers from all corners of New England and New York participated.
The Lancaster Host Hotel served as the Southern site once again and the facility was stretched by the turnout of growers. Over 70 exhibitors were present for another day of upbeat interaction.
The educational program was the same at each Expo. Tom Kirby of Griffin's plant department presented an overview of new varieties from this past spring's industry Pack Trials in California. Peter Konjoian's presentation focused on how price discounting and crop shrinkage reduce profit margin and Rick Yates discussed how the proper use of pesticides saves money, reduces shrinkage, and improves profitability. A panel of exhibitor representatives completed the program by discussing energy conservation practices that significantly reduce energy consumption in the greenhouse.
Combined, the two Expos attracted over 1,500 growers who enjoyed the days' activities, cashed in on day-of-show discounts and specials, and took part in several drawings for free gifts. As always, the food and refreshments were excellent and growers ended their day having the opportunity to learn more about their businesses and our industry. Thank you to those who attended…see you next year!
