A Legacy of Innovation
DeWitt Company was founded in 1974 with the concept of stopping weeds, while still allowing water, air and nutrients to pass through to
the soil, allowing for healthier plants. The company started with a single product—DeWitt Weed Barrier™—and quickly expanded its line
to include a wide range of woven and nonwoven landscape fabrics, woven groundcover, frost protection fabrics, shade cloth, geotextiles,
erosion control products, and tree care products. Today, DeWitt continues to serve these same professionals across the United States and
internationally, offering more than 600 products across 14 product categories.
Woven Ground Cover Fabric
One of DeWitt’s flagship product categories —and arguably the most essential for commercial growers—is its selection of ground cover
fabrics. These products serve as a barrier to weeds while allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the soil.
DeWitt’s woven groundcovers, such as the industry leading Sunbelt Woven Groundcover™, are particularly popular in large-scale
nurseries and greenhouse operations. Made from UV-stabilized polypropylene, these fabrics are durable and designed to last multiple
growing seasons, even in fully exposed environments. They help reduce the need for chemical herbicides, saving costs and minimizing
environmental impact. The fabric’s striped pattern also aids in plant spacing and layout, improving consistency and labor efficiency.
In recent years, DeWitt has added White Woven Groundcover for light reflection to the lower canopy of fruit and flowering plants, and also
Green and Brown Woven Groundcover alternatives for blending into the surrounding area.
Frost and Plant Protection
For growers contending with sudden temperature swings and damaging cold or frost, DeWitt’s Frost Protection Blankets and Plant
Protection Fabrics are vital tools. These covers are designed to shield crops from sudden drops in temperature, wind, and desiccation
without the need for heaters or complex climate control systems.
Products like DeWitt N-Sulate offer thermal protection while allowing light and moisture to reach the plants. Used in the early spring and
late fall, these fabrics can extend growing seasons and reduce losses from unexpected frosts.
Lighter weight products like Seed & Plant Guard offer excellent insect protection for plants, and are also a great upgrade over traditional
straw covering on newly seeded lawns. The micro environment under the fabric offers much higher seed germination rates, lessens
erosion from rain or overhead sprinklers, and is reusable.
Shade Cloth
Controlling light exposure is another crucial aspect of commercial growing, especially for light-sensitive crops. DeWitt offers a wide variety
of knitted and woven shade cloths that provide from 30% to 90% shade, allowing growers to fine-tune conditions for different plants.
The shade fabrics are made from polypropylene (Woven Shade) and high-density polyethylene (Knitted Shade) and are UV-treated to
withstand direct uv exposure over several years. Customizable in size, DeWitt shade cloth is widely used in nurseries, greenhouses, and
outdoor growing operations.
Tree Care
Tree farms and orchards also benefit from DeWitt’s product offerings. Tree Wrap protects young saplings from wind, sunscald, rodents,
and equipment damage. DeWitt’s Tree Squares and Tree Circles are made from Woven Polypropylene fabric and fit around the base of
trees to suppress weeds and conserve water, giving young trees a much better chance of survival.
Conclusion
For commercial growers, the right tools can make the difference between a successful season and a costly one. DeWitt Company’s
range of landscape and horticultural products and accessories are designed with professionals in mind—delivering quality, durability, and
efficiency. Whether you’re a 500-acre nursery or a small hobby greenhouse, DeWitt’s solutions offer proven value, season after season.
