Hemp Hints:
Avoiding the three
toughest pests
By Tami Van Gaal, CEA Division Leader
Fighting pests in hemp requires a proactive strategy, as the chemical
toolbox is greatly restricted compared to other crops. While changes to
labels and state rules are likely to come, regulations around chemical
use currently vary by state, and the lists are typically very short. This
scarcity of allowed chemicals and the fact that the end product will be
used by people seeking health benefits means that growers need to rely
more heavily on culture and non-chemical control. In other words, growers
need to apply an integrated approach to pest management.
